Flu Season Story Pitch: UO’s “Shoo Flu!” Campaign
At the University of Oregon, I pitched a story to Daily Emerald reporter Veronica Schneider about the “Shoo Flu!” campaign, which aimed to vaccinate 85% of students by winter term. The campaign included mobile flu shot clinics and incentives like free food and a chance to win an iPad Pro, addressing flu-related absences that affected over 6,500 students the previous year. This experience helped me develop media outreach skills, learn how to pitch timely stories, and understand how to engage journalists on important campus health issues.
Campaign
“Love Your Lane” Campaign for Lane Transit District
“Love Your Lane” is a public relations campaign created for Lane Transit District (LTD) to improve its image and increase ridership among female University of Oregon students. By partnering with Women in Flight, Greek Life, and the Outdoor Program, the campaign uses initiatives like a sorority bus wrap competition, social media engagement, and guided hikes to promote LTD as a safe, eco-friendly transportation option. The goal is to increase first-time female riders by 10-15% while fostering community engagement and sustainability awareness.
Feature Story
Kylie Hecht: Leading the Charge for Change at the University of Oregon
I wrote a feature story on Kylie Hecht, a senior at the University of Oregon and executive participant relations chair for Dance Marathon Oregon. Hecht has helped lead the organization’s shift from large dance marathons to smaller fundraisers and volunteer initiatives to continue raising funds for children’s hospitals, even during the pandemic. I highlighted how her public relations skills, learned through UO coursework, have played a key role in her leadership, event coordination, and communications efforts. This story allowed me to practice writing compelling narratives and showcasing impactful student leadership.
News Release
UO President Karl Scholz Honored with Emerald Award for Leadership
This press release highlights University of Oregon President Karl Scholz’s recognition with the inaugural Emerald Award for Leadership by the Eugene Chamber of Commerce. The award honors Scholz for his dedication to reducing financial barriers to education and fostering connections between UO and the community. I crafted the release to emphasize Scholz’s initiatives, like the Pathways to Success scholarship, and his commitment to social responsibility and economic mobility. Through this assignment, I practiced writing clear, concise news releases, using the inverted pyramid style, while showcasing Scholz’s impactful leadership.

Strong Girls United: Empowering Girls through Confidence and Strength
This email campaign was designed to engage potential donors for Strong Girls United, a foundation that empowers young girls through mentorship, sports, and mental skills training. The message focuses on a compelling story of Sofia, a 12-year-old girl who overcame self-doubt to become a leader, to illustrate the foundation’s impact. By clearly outlining donation options and including a call to action, I aimed to drive both financial support and volunteer engagement. This project helped me practice crafting persuasive messaging while highlighting the foundation’s mission to inspire confidence and resilience in young girls.
